Schubert
Schubert Estate is located on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, an area highly regarded for its vineyards. Across the road is the Greenock Creek crushing and winemaking facility and vineyards. Next door to Schubert Estate are the Torbreck vineyards and the Penfolds Stonewell Road vineyard.
As growers the Schuberts first supplied their grapes to the neighbouring winery Torbreck Vintners.
Schubert Estate Goose-yard Block Shiraz was made for the first time in the year 2000. It was originally approached as an opportunity to try to better understand Torbreck's requirements from fruit regarding grape quality, maturity, flavour, colour, ripeness at harvest, and how the Schuberts could meet those needs. From that foundation, a small quantity of approx. 80 dozen, was made by the Schuberts.
The Goose-yard Block was planted to Shiraz in 1996 and first harvested in 2000. In the same year, Steve and Cecilia Schubert, together with several friends, made a batch of wine and established an annual vintage tradition by setting aside one hogshead made entirely on the property. The grapes were handpicked, from the first eight rows of the Goose-yard Block, basket pressed and fermented on the Schubert property. Subsequent years introduced the picking of a few more rows and a little more wine was made - With 2 barriques for the 2001 vintage and 100 cases for the 2002 vintage. By the time the Schuberts made the 2003 Goose-yard Block Shiraz the production reached 200 dozen not yet to the quantity required to qualify entering in the major Wine Show competitions and Exhibitions.
